It Snowed a Little
Central Oregon had been waiting for it's first good snow of the season and it arrived just in time for the holidays. After three days of snow, we have had about a foot here on Grizzly Mountain and more is on the way beginning tomorrow.
My wonderful son will be arriving tomorrow, so I won't be listing any more items in my Etsy shop until after Christmas.
To my regular readers, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a very prosperous and healthy New Year!

All of my Celtic Ogham pendants are individually hand carved by me. There are about as many variations of interpretations of the Ogham symbols as there are interpreters. I hope you enjoy mine!

~~What are Celtic Oghams?~~
The Celtic Ogham alphabet dates from the fourth century. The alphabet is named for Ogmos, the Celtic god of knowledge and communication. The alphabet consists of twenty letters, each named for a different tree believed sacred to the Druids.
According to Wikipedia, the letter names are interpreted as names of trees or shrubs in manuscript tradition, both in Auraicept na n-Éces ('The Scholars' Primer') and In Lebor Ogaim ('The Ogam Tract'). They were first discussed in
modern times by Roderic O'Flaherty (1685), who took them at face value. The Auraicept itself is aware that not all names are known tree names, saying "Now all these are wood names such as are found in the Ogham Book of Woods, and are not derived from men", admitting that "some of these trees are not known today". The Auraicept gives a short phrase or kenning for each letter, known as a BrÃatharogam, that traditionally accompanied each letter name, and a further
gloss explaining their meanings and identifying the tree or plant linked to each letter. Only five of the twenty primary letters have tree names that the Auraicept considers comprehensible without further glosses, namely beith "birch", fearn "alder", saille "willow" , duir "oak" and coll "hazel". All the other names have to be glossed or "translated" with a plant name.

The Solitary Fern
This "Solitary Fern" pendant was created using earthenware clay. No two glazed pieces ever come out of the kiln the same, so each piece is truly unique. This pendant hangs from an 18" ball chain and is available for purchase in my Etsy shop. A gift box is included with your purchase.
A special note to those of you that have contacted me regarding my earthenware Celtic Ogham and Runic pendants--First of all, THANK YOU! for your interest! I was "lucky" enough to have been chosen for jury duty for the months of November and December. We live in a sparsely populated county, so there isn't a huge jury pool. Between that and getting ready for my wonderful son to be home for Thanksgiving I don't have a lot of time to create, but hopefully I will get back on track soon :)
I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Two Great Discoveries
I don't usually use my blog to promote techie "stuff" but I thought I would share a couple of interesting new sites. Most of my other blog sharing sites have closed, so I went in search for a new blog sharing site and I found Scoutle.
What is Scoutle.com? Scoutle is an automated social network for bloggers and functions as an ideal Guide for internet users to find a valuable blog, no matter the language, subject or location.
Scoutle helps you find, promote and connect blogs using an automated rating and matching system. Not only find a blog easily, but also know what a blog is worth and discover similar blogs.
The other neat site I found was Qurify.com which is a
site that generates QR codes. QR Codes are 2 dimensional barcodes that are easily scanned using any modern mobile phone. This code will then be converted (called "dequrified") into a piece of (interactive) text and/or link. For instance, you walk around in the city and notice a poster for an event that seems interesting. You take out your mobile phone, scan the QR Code and will instantly get more information and a link to a website where you can book your tickets. You don't have to type or remember anything and because QR Codes can be very small, this saves a lot of space on the product as well. Now I just need to figure out how to use these to market our art!

Secret Spiral Ceramic Pendant
This dainty "Secret Spiral" pendant was created using an impression from a sea shell from our family collection. No two glazed pieces ever come out of the kiln the same, so each hand carved piece is truly unique. This pendant hangs from an 18" ball chain. A gift box is included with your purchase.
Vintage Copper and Purple Swarovski Crystal Earrings
Filigree beads and headpins made from vintage copper, give this stunning pair of earrings their character. A gorgeous deep purple Swarovski crystal sits atop each vintage copper bead. For some reason, my camera makes the Swarovski beads look blue, but they are in fact purple.
Copper has long been thought to have healing properties, and many people believe that copper has the ability to conduct spiritual energy back and forth from individuals, the mind, crystals, auras, and the spirit world. Some New Age followers also combine it with their stones and crystals to “align” the properties of the crystals
Celtic Rampant Lion Ceramic Pendant
I created this Celtic Rampant Lion piece from earthenware clay. It's been glazed with a purple colored glaze to have the appearance of an ancient relic. The bead is a matte glass crow bead.
What is the significance of the Rampant Lion symbol?
According to Wikipedia, the lion is a common charge in heraldry. It traditionally symbolizes bravery, valour, strength, and royalty, since traditionally, it is regarded as the king of beasts.

Spiral Hand Ceramic Pendant
Made with love on Grizzly Mountain!
This Spiral Hand pendant has been glazed with a dark Chili Pepper colored glaze. No two glazed pieces ever come out of the kiln the same, so each hand carved piece is truly unique.
The spiral hand symbol can mean many things to many people. To some, it's seen as a symbol of universal healing energy, to others, a protective symbol to ward off evil.
Oregon Petroglyph Ceramic Pendant
Studying ancient cultures is a hobby of mine and I like to use their symbols in my pieces. This petroglyph is located in Harney county Oregon. He/she has been carved into earthenware clay and glazed to have the appearance of an aged rock.
Spiral of Life
This large spiral pendant has been glazed with a beautiful blue glaze. No two glazed pieces ever come out of the kiln the same, so each hand carved piece is truly unique.
**What does the Spiral symbol mean?**
According to Wikipedia, the spiral plays a certain role in symbolism, and appears in megalithic art, notably in the Newgrange tomb or in many Galician petroglyphs such as the one in Mogor.
While scholars are still debating the subject, there is a growing acceptance that the simple spiral, when found in Chinese art, is an early symbol for the sun. Roof tiles dating back to the Tang Dynasty with this symbol have been found west of the ancient city of Chang'an (modern-day Xian).
The spiral is the most ancient symbol found on every civilized continent. Due to its appearance at burial sites across the globe, the spiral most likely represented the "life-death-rebirth" cycle. Similarly, the spiral symbolized the sun, as ancient people thought the sun was born each morning, died each night, and was reborn the next morning.
The study of spirals in nature have a long history, Christopher Wren observed that many shells form a logarithmic spiral. Jan Swammerdam observed the common mathematical characteristics of a wide range of shells from Helix to Spirula and Henry Nottidge Moseley described the mathematics of univalve shells. D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson's On Growth and Form gives extensive treatment to these spirals. He describes how shells are formed by rotating a closed curve around a fixed axis, the shape of the curve remains fixed but its size grows in a geometric progression. In some shell such as Nautilus and ammonites the generating curve revolves in a plane pirpendicular to the axis and the shell will form a planer discoid shape. In others it follows a skew path forming a helico-spiral pattern.
Thompson also studied spirals occurring in horns, teeth, claws and plants.

Crafts on the Coast
Our last show of the season is rapidly approaching! I will be removing many of my ceramic pendants from my Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop to take to the Crafts on the Coast Annual Harvest and Holidays Art and Craft Fair in Yachats, Oregon. This is a wonderful venue for a show and there is always a great variety of artists, not to mention the location :) If you have "bookmarked" any pendants as possible holiday gifts, you may want to go take a second look before they are gone. I'm thinking positive here! Everyone is going to be in the holiday shopping mood the first weekend in November, and I'm going to sell every pendant I take :)
I've also just finished some new Runic and starfish pendants, so if you are planning on being in Yachats, Oregon the first weekend in November, stop in and say "Hi!".

New Old Irish Blessing Stone Pendants
Two new Old Irish Blessing Stone Pendants were added to my Good Dirt Jewelry shop today!
These Blessing Stones are patterned after the Buckquoy spindle whorl, which was excavated in Buckquoy, Birsay, Orkney, Scotland in 1970. The old Irish Ogham inscription is believed to date back to the 8th century. Historians believe it was a standard Old Irish ogham benedictory message, Benddact anim L. meaning "a blessing on the soul of L.". The stone from which the whorl was made, and on which the inscription was written, is native to Orkney.

Celtic Spinning Dragons Earthenware Ceramic Pendant
Made with love on Grizzly Mountain!
I created this "Celtic Spinning Dragons" piece from earthenware clay. It has been glazed with an earthy iron ore glaze. Measuring about 1 1/4" in diameter, this pendant hangs from an 18" ball and chain necklace. Don't forget--you can click the photo to get a closer look!
**Dragons in Celtic Mythology**
According to Wikipedia, "In Britain, the dragon is now more commonly associated with Wales due to the national flag having a red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) as its emblem and their national rugby union and rugby league teams are known as the dragons. This may originate in Arthurian Legend where Myrddin, employed by Gwrtheyrn, had a vision of the red dragon (representing the Britons) and the white dragon (representing the invading Saxons) fighting beneath Dinas Emrys. The red dragon was linked with the Britons who are today represented by the Welsh (and Cornish), and it is believed that the white dragon refers to the Saxons who invaded Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries. This particular legend also features in the Mabinogion in the story of Llud and Llefelys."

A Little Celtic Love
My laptop is still down, so I haven't been as prolific online as I'd like to be. I was able to add this "Celtic Love" and three other new pendants to my Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop.
This "Celtic Love" pendant is made from earthenware clay and has been accented with a very old African Krobo bead. It has been glazed to have a distressed look. The cord is a wonderful faux suede material that doesn't "shed" on your clothes like real suede does and is very easy to tie so your pendant can compliment any neckline. If faux suede is not your favorite material and you prefer to wear your pendant on a chain, you can easily remove it.
What are African Krobo Beads?
Krobo powder glass beads are made in vertical molds fashioned out of a special, locally dug clay. Most molds have a number of depressions, designed to hold one bead each, and each of these depressions, in turn, has a small central depression to hold the stem of a cassava leaf. The mold is filled with finely ground glass that can be built up in layers in order to form sequences and patterns of different shapes and colors. The technique could be described as being somewhat similar to creating a sand "painting" or to filling a bottle with different-colored sands and is called the "vertical-mold dry powder glass technique". When cassava leaf stems are used, these will burn away during firing and leave the bead perforation. Certain powder glass bead variants, however, receive their perforations after firing, by piercing the still hot and pliable glass with a hand-made, pointed metal tool. Firing takes place in clay kilns until the glass fuse.

Celebrating Another Anniversary!
We'll be traveling to celebrate another anniversary this weekend!
In our former lives, we worked and traveled at the pleasure of the Department of the Interior, more precisely the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Over the course of his career, Dave managed some of the largest game ranges in the United States, with the most recent being Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. We spent six years in Burns, which is located in eastern Oregon and is also known as the "Oregon Outback". This weekend, Malheur NWR will be celebrating it's 100th anniversary as a National Wildlife Refuge and we have been invited to attend!
Also, Rogue Ales has released a Great Egret Pale Ale to commemorate this event!
If you try to contact us via email or Etsy convo this weekend, we will reply as soon as we return on Sunday. Thanks to Hurricane Ike, the motherboard for my laptop is still sitting in Houston.

Spiral Hand Symbol Ceramic Pendant
Along with the new Celtic Oghams, I have added a few more of my latest earthenware pendants to my Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop, including this Spiral Hand pendant.
The spiral is an ancient symbol reflecting the universal pattern of growth and evolution. The spiral pattern appears again and again in the natural world from the milky way galaxy to snail shells. The living spiral does not begin or end, it is an ongoing process of innocence, discovery, community, and the essence that connects all things.
New Oghams Added
I finally got a few more Celtic Ogham pendants added to my Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop! Things have been a little crazy around here lately, so I haven't gotten as many pieces finished as I had hoped. Oh well, I'll just consider more to later job security :)

I created this "Round Water" pendant from earthenware clay. It has been glazed with a dark "Blue Grotto" glaze. No two pieces ever come out of the kiln the same!

The Sacred Salmon Earthenware Pendant
To the Celts, the fish symbolized knowledge, wisdom, the gift of prophecy and inspiration.
The Salmon of Wisdom were keepers of all knowledge. Mythology tells us that this knowledge was attained by eating the nuts of the sacred hazel tree.
I created my "Sacred Salmon" from earthenware clay. It has been glazed with a dark chili pepper red glaze. Measuring about 1 3/4" in length by 1/2" wide, this pendant hangs from an 18" ball and chain necklace. This piece is currently for sale in my Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop.

New Additions to Our Shop!
Update! This piece sold on the first day! Many thanks, Diane!
Finally! All of our earthenware pendants are now located in our Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop! In addition to those that have been listed for a while, I have added some new pieces! Most of my new pieces are more organic in form and design.
The pendant that is featured in this post, is one of my favorite new designs that features a simple spiral. These are all done free form, so no two will be exactly alike. If you'd like to see a more detailed view, please click on the photo above.
Don't worry, there will be more Oghams in the future :)

Fresh from the Kiln!
Nothing is more exciting than opening the kiln door! You never know what you're going to find as the glazes never turn out the same way twice.
Our newest addition to our earthenware line, is our Old Irish Blessing Stone Pendants. These pendants were made to look like the Buckquoy spindle whorl, which was excavated in Buckquoy, Birsay, Orkney, Scotland in 1970. The old Irish Ogham inscription is believed to date back to the 8th century.
According to Wikipedia, the inscription was once used as positive proof that the Pictish language was not Indo-European, being variously read as
E(s/n)DDACTA(n/lv)IM(v/lb)
(e/)(s/n/)DDACTANIMV
(e/)TMIQAVSALL(e/q)
however, in 1995 historian Katherine Forsyth reading
ENDDACTANIM(f/lb)
claimed that it was a standard Old Irish ogham benedictory message, Benddact anim L. meaning "a blessing on the soul of L.". The stone from which the whorl was made, and on which the inscription was written, is native to Orkney.
We are still in the process of photographing these new pendants, so please keep checking our Good Dirt Jewelry Etsy shop for new additions. Our other earthenware pendants that are still located in our Grizzly Mountain Arts Etsy shop will soon find their new home at the Good Dirt Jewelry shop in the very near future.

Making a Change
Okay, I'm a woman so I'm allowed to change my mind!
I had been hearing how wonderful Big Cartel was, or was going to be I should say, but after having my ceramic pendants there for several months it's just not working out. I had planned on adding my new pieces to my BC shop after our upcoming show, but that's not going to happen because I've just opened a new shop on Etsy!
Good Dirt Jewelry will now be located on Etsy. You may know that we have another successful shop there already and we really like the site, so "Good Bye!" Big Cartel.
UPDATE I have just finished adding the pendants from our Big Cartel shop to my Good Dirt Jewelry shop on Etsy! Next week, I will move all of the earthenware Oghams to the new shop too!

Getting Ready for the Holidays!
There haven't been any new additions to our "Good Dirt Jewelry" Big Cartel shop recently, and the reason being, we have a huge show coming up!
Grizzly Mountain Arts will be participating in the Native American Festival in Sisters, Oregon the last weekend in August. This wonderful show is held each year in Creekside Park, which is a perfect venue. The sight, smell and sounds of tall Ponderosa pines mixed with Native American flute music is beyond description.
What does this have to do with the Big Cartel shop? The Native American Festival will be one of our last shows of the season, so I will be adding new "Good Dirt" pieces in time for some early holiday shopping. Please give us a bookmark and check back frequently to see what we may have added.
